Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation: Does it really work, and WHY?

Associations pay millions of dollars to air radio commercials to highlight the horrible damage caused by smoking, but smokers mostly just mute scare tactics.

Why do they still do this if they know how bad it is for them?

First, Let’s discuss why some people continue to smoke, even after they’ve been diagnosed with a condition caused by their habit of smoking, or if they’ve watched someone very close to them fall ill to a condition as a result of smoking.

The mind’s number one job is to protect us.

Behind every behavior is a positive intention. The mind resorts to smoking when that positive intention is called upon by certain situations.

(When we are triggered.)

This intention may be different for each smoker. Thus also meaning the triggers can differ. It could be for social pleasure, relaxation, solitude, stress relief, or for the purpose of activity to occupy the hands and body.

The act of smoking also CREATES its own trigger, as Alan Carr defines in his very popular book:

What I mean by this is that smoking a cigarette creates a state of emergencies and reactions that cause the body to be tense.

The reactions are not just during, but mostly after you’ve finished the cigarette.

Once the tension relieves, the mind associates that relief with the actual cause of the physical stress, hence, the incorrect association with cigarettes as a stress relief.

The trigger is the need for the nicotine (or what the body thinks it needs.)

The subconscious then relates this need to the idea of relaxation, which of course is an incorrect association. It is deep rooted none the less. This book is really an amazing read for anyone currently smoking and looking to quit, or anyone working to help people become non-smokers.

I myself quit smoking in 2010 with Hypnosis. At that time, I was working from home in a stressful position, and I was able to smoke whenever I wanted. I was smoking 2 packs of Menthol 100s per day.

One Hypnosis session and I was done.

I Never looked back, and my Husband (at the time) continued to smoke. I know the craziness that smokers go through in the middle of the night when they have to leave the house because they are out of cigarettes, re-routing an entire trip just because you don’t have enough cigarettes, or scheduling events around the ability to smoke. It’s maddening.

You can break free from it.

I’d like to also mention here that there is a group on Facebook named “Quit Smoking Support.” At the time of this article, the group has over 31 thousand members. Again, if you are struggling to quit, or if you work with current smokers, it would only benefit you to be a part of this group, and of course, to be able to contribute any encouragement possible. Simply knowing there is that much support available at your fingertips is so helpful.

Hypnosis has proven to be helpful to many smokers seeking a non-smoking identity. It has been proven in a number of studies to be the number one method for lasting smoking cessation.

You see if you are having trouble letting go of smoking, it means you are associating this habit as part of your identity. Hypnosis serves to assist in the disassociation of that belief and integration. Once it is disassociated, there isn’t a need any longer for the habit.

This is not something the Hypnotist does to you.

This is something YOU (are able to) do with the assistance of the Hypnotic Coach.

Situations where you Shouldn’t seek hypnosis for Smoking Cessation:

Hypnosis is not for you if you have a pre-diagnosed mental illness or condition (Unless you have a referral from your Healthcare Provider,) or if you really just:

-Feel like you SHOULD quit, but don’t think you’re ready

-Quitting for someone else

-You’re just not ready.
